Repair or Replace a Lost Filling, Crown or Veneer

A loose or lost filling, crown, or veneer can leave your tooth vulnerable to discomfort or further damage, so it’s important to have it evaluated promptly. Your dentist can examine the tooth and restoration to determine whether it can be repaired and reattached or replaced.

01.

Process

  • Complete your emergency exam: Your dentist evaluates the affected tooth and your loose, broken, or missing restoration to determine treatment.
  • Review your treatment options: Your dentist determines whether the restoration can be repaired or whether your tooth requires a new filling, crown, veneer, or another treatment.
  • Treatment: EmergDENT strives to diagnose and treat your dental problem during the same appointment whenever possible.
  • Protect your tooth between stages: If your treatment cannot be completed immediately, your dental team will explain the next steps needed to restore and protect your tooth.
  • Complete your restoration: Return for any additional care required to complete your permanent restoration and restore your tooth’s function and appearance.

02.

Next Steps

  • Follow your aftercare instructions: Care for your repaired or replaced restoration as directed by your dentist.
  • Monitor the restoration: Contact EmergDENT if your filling, crown, or veneer feels loose, becomes damaged, or falls out again.
  • Continue with your regular dentist: If you already have a primary dentist, EmergDENT can work with their office to support continuity of your care.

FAQ

  • What should I do if my filling falls out?

Save any pieces, avoid chewing on that side, and schedule a dental appointment so your tooth can be evaluated and the filling repaired or replaced.

  • Can a lost crown or veneer be reattached?

Your dentist must evaluate the tooth and restoration to determine whether it can be reattached or needs to be replaced.

  • Why do fillings, crowns, or veneers become loose?

    There are a few causes.

    • Bacteria can cause tooth decay, which can erode the remaining tooth structure and make the restoration loose.
    • Grinding your teeth can damage the restoration.
    • A poor-fitting restoration is more likely to become loose.
