Tooth Knocked Out

Knocked-Out Tooth? Every Minute Matters

Having a tooth knocked out can be frightening, and getting professional dental care quickly is important. Whether the injury occurs during sports, in a fall, or from another accident, we provide prompt care for dental trauma and other urgent dental injuries. Our team will evaluate the affected area, check for additional damage, and determine the appropriate treatment based on the condition of the tooth and surrounding tissues.

Because dental injuries can happen at any time, EmergDENT offers same-day appointments, welcomes walk-ins, and provides extended hours every day of the year. Whenever possible, we’ll diagnose and treat your emergency during the same visit, and referrals are available if specialized care is required. When an accident puts your smile at risk, our team is here to help you feel better, faster.

When to Seek Immediate Care

  • A permanent tooth has been completely knocked out
  • A tooth has become loose or displaced
  • You have a broken or fractured tooth

  • You experience severe or worsening pain
  • The gums, mouth, jaw, or face begin to swell
  • You have sustained dental trauma during a fall, sports injury, or accident

02.

Process

  • We’ll examine the injured area and assess the tooth, gums, and surrounding tissues.
  • Digital X-rays may be used to evaluate the injury and look for additional dental damage.
  • We’ll explain what we find and discuss the appropriate treatment options for your situation.
  • Whenever possible, we strive to diagnose and treat dental emergencies in a single appointment.
  • Follow-up appointments are available when needed to monitor healing or continue treatment.
  • If your injury requires specialized care, we can provide an appropriate referral.

FAQ

  • What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?

Act quickly and handle the tooth carefully. Pick it up by the crown (the visible chewing surface), not the root. If it’s dirty, gently rinse it without scrubbing or removing attached tissue. Seek emergency dental care immediately.

  • How should I transport a knocked-out tooth to the dentist?

Keep the tooth moist and avoid touching the root. If you cannot safely place the permanent tooth back into its socket, transport it in cold milk or an appropriate tooth-preservation solution and head to the dentist immediately. Do not allow the tooth to dry out, or wrap it in a dry tissue or cloth.

  • Can a knocked-out tooth be saved?

In some cases, yes. A knocked-out permanent tooth may be successfully replanted, particularly when dental treatment is provided quickly, and the tooth is handled and stored properly. Because timing can affect the outcome, contact an emergency dentist as soon as possible rather than waiting to see how the area feels.
