Tooth Extractions for Damaged or Problematic Teeth

Your dentist may recommend removing a tooth from its socket when preserving it is no longer the best option. You may need an extraction for severe decay, infection, advanced gum disease, an impacted tooth, overcrowding, or damage that cannot be repaired with a filling or crown. Simple and surgical extractions may be used depending on your tooth. Your dentist will numb the area before treatment, and we offer sedation to keep you as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

Following the extraction, your dentist can provide recommendations for tooth replacement, including dentures, implants, and bridges, depending on your needs.

01.

Process

  • Complete your emergency exam: Your dentist evaluates your tooth, symptoms, and oral health to determine whether extraction is necessary.
  • Take digital X-rays: Imaging helps your dentist evaluate your tooth and surrounding structures and plan the appropriate type of extraction.
  • Prepare for your extraction: Local anesthesia and sedation are used to help keep you comfortable throughout your procedure.
  • Remove your tooth: For a simple extraction, your visible tooth is loosened and removed. A surgical extraction may require an incision when your tooth is not easily accessible.

02.

Next Steps

  • Protect the blood clot: Avoid disturbing the extraction site while the blood clot forms and your mouth begins healing.
  • Reduce swelling: Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek. Once swelling decreases, a warm compress may provide additional comfort.
  • Choose soft foods: Eat soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes during the first one or two days.
  • Avoid suction and smoking: Do not use straws or smoke, as these actions can dislodge the blood clot and contribute to dry socket.
  • Keep your mouth clean: Follow your dentist’s oral hygiene instructions and use gentle salt-water rinses when directed to keep the extraction area clean.
