Save Your Natural Tooth With Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment can save your tooth when its inner pulp becomes inflamed, infected, or damaged by deep decay or injury. Your dentist removes the infected tissue, cleans and treats the canals, and restores the tooth. A dental crown may also be placed afterward to help protect it from further damage.

01.

Process

  • Complete your emergency exam: Your dentist evaluates your tooth, symptoms, and oral health to determine the cause of your pain and whether root canal treatment is appropriate.
  • Take digital X-rays: Imaging helps your dentist determine the extent of the damage or infection inside and around your tooth.
  • Preparation: The area is numbed, and sedation is provided if needed.
  • Remove the infection: Your dentist carefully removes infected or diseased tissue from inside your tooth.
  • Clean and treat the canals: The root canals are thoroughly cleaned and treated to remove remaining infectious material.
  • Restore your tooth: Your tooth is filled with material designed to support and strengthen it. A dental crown may also be recommended to protect your treated tooth from future fractures or breakage.

02.

Next Steps

  • Follow your aftercare instructions: Use the specific guidance your dentist provides to care for your newly treated tooth while the surrounding area heals.
  • Expect some temporary sensitivity: Your tooth and surrounding gums may feel mildly sensitive or uncomfortable after treatment, and discomfort should decrease as healing progresses.
  • Monitor your tooth: Contact EmergDENT if you have concerns about your treated tooth or recovery.
  • Continue your dental care: Maintain your ongoing dental care to help protect your treated tooth and overall oral health.

Severe toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, swollen or tender areas, or recurring gum abscesses may indicate that your tooth needs evaluation.

  • Can a root canal help save a damaged tooth?

Yes. Root canal treatment removes infected or diseased tissue from inside your tooth, allowing it to be treated and restored rather than extracted.

  • How do I care for my tooth after a root canal?

Follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions and return for recommended care, including a dental crown when needed, to help protect your treated tooth.
